Free Instagram auto-DM tools in 2026: what each free plan really includes

Short answer

The best free Instagram auto-DM tools in 2026 are DM Automata (1,000 DMs a month and 500 contacts, plus a bio link, app opener and store product), LinkDM (1,000 DMs) and ReplyRush (1,500 DMs), all with no credit card. ManyChat's free plan stops at 25 active contacts, Linktree only auto-replies on its $35 Premium plan, and Spur and Chatfuel offer trials, not free plans. A free plan with about 1,000 DMs a month covers a creator posting three Reels a week.

  • DM Automata, LinkDM and ReplyRush each give 1,000 or more free DMs a month with no card.
  • DM Automata's free plan is the only one here that also includes a bio link, app opener and store product.
  • ManyChat Free runs out after 25 active contacts and keeps ManyChat branding on your messages.
  • Spur and Chatfuel have free trials, not free plans.

Search for a "free Instagram auto DM tool" and you will find a dozen products that all say free. Look closer and the word covers very different deals: a genuine free-forever plan with a thousand DMs a month, a plan that stops after 25 people, a 7-day trial, or a link-in-bio tool that only auto-replies on its most expensive tier. This guide lays out what each free plan really includes in 2026, the catches that don't appear on the pricing page, and how far a free plan actually takes a working creator. Figures were checked on each vendor's pricing page in September 2026.

Every notable free plan, side by side

These are the Instagram DM automation tools creators ask about most, with what you get for $0 on each one.

Two things stand out. First, only six of these nine tools have a real free-forever plan for Instagram auto-DMs, and the allowances range from 25 contacts to 1,500 DMs a month. Second, the DM number alone doesn't tell you which free plan is best: branding, the features that are locked, and whether you need other tools alongside it matter just as much.

Free plan vs free trial: why the difference matters

A free plan is a tier you can stay on indefinitely at $0; a free trial is a paid plan you can use for a few days before you are charged. Both are useful, but they answer different questions. A trial tells you whether you like a tool's paid features. A free plan lets you run real automations on real posts for months, see what your audience responds to, and only pay once the numbers justify it.

For Instagram DM automation the difference is bigger than usual, because results take time. A comment-to-DM campaign needs a Reel, a few days of comments and some follow-up before you know whether it works. Seven days is barely enough to publish two posts. If a tool only offers a trial, you are effectively deciding to pay before you have seen a single month of data.

Some trials also ask for a card up front and convert automatically. That is not a trick, but it is worth a calendar reminder. The free plans in the table above (DM Automata, LinkDM, ReplyRush and CreatorFlow) are all listed as needing no credit card.

Each free tool, honestly

DM Automata Free

DM Automata plans: Free $0, Pro and Business with DM and contact limits
DM Automata's Free plan next to Pro and Business. The free limits are fixed, with no card and no per-contact charges.

DM Automata's free plan includes 1 Instagram account, 1,000 DMs a month, 500 contacts, a smart link-in-bio page, an app opener and 1 store product, with no credit card. The automations cover the triggers creators actually use: comments on posts and Reels (on one post or on every post), story replies, story mentions and DM keywords, with exact, contains or any-comment matching, message variants, an optional public comment reply, a send delay, an hourly cap, contact tags and email capture. DM Automata is an approved Meta Tech Provider: it connects through Instagram Login on the official API, so it never asks for your password and doesn't need a Facebook Page.

  • Good for: creators who want comment-to-DM plus the rest of the funnel (the bio link the DM points to, an app opener so links open in the real browser or app, and a product to sell) without paying for three tools.
  • Limits: one Instagram account, basic automations rather than unlimited ones, and the 500-contact cap, which is the limit most growing accounts reach first. Broadcasts, the post scheduler, analytics and the full store are on Pro.

LinkDM Free

LinkDM also gives 1,000 DMs a month on one Instagram account with no card, which makes it one of the two most generous free plans for Instagram by DM count alongside DM Automata. It covers post, Reel and story automations.

  • Good for: creators who only need the DM itself and already have a bio link and store elsewhere.
  • Limits: LinkDM branding stays on the free plan, and the public comment auto-reply, lead generation, DM planner and universal triggers are paid features. Pro is $19 a month for 3 accounts.

ReplyRush Free

ReplyRush's pricing page lists the largest raw allowance of the group: 1,500 DMs a month for one Instagram account and one Facebook account, with post, Reel and story automation included.

  • Good for: accounts that send a lot of DMs but don't need to collect emails or reply publicly under comments.
  • Limits: the free plan excludes the public comment auto-reply, follow-gated DMs and the email collector, and branding removal is a paid feature. Paid plans start at $10 a month (Lite, 7,500 DMs), and branding removal starts on the $25 Boost plan.

CreatorFlow Free

CreatorFlow's free plan gives 500 DMs a month on one account, with unlimited automations, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers and templates.

  • Good for: small accounts that want to experiment with many different keywords at once.
  • Limits: half the DMs of DM Automata or LinkDM, and email collection, follow gating, link tracking and CSV export are on Pro at $15 a month. When the monthly limit is reached, automations pause until the next cycle.

InstantDM Free

InstantDM homepage
InstantDM homepage, October 2026.

InstantDM's homepage advertises a free plan with 500 credits a month, but its pricing page only lists paid plans: Legend Pro at $12 a month ($9.99 billed yearly) and Trendsetter at $29.99 ($24.99 billed yearly), both with unlimited contacts. Treat the free tier as a small trial allowance and check what it includes when you sign up.

  • Good for: testing AI-assisted replies on a small scale before moving to an inexpensive unlimited plan.
  • Limits: 500 credits is the smallest allowance among the real free plans, and the page doesn't say how many accounts or contacts the free tier includes.

ManyChat Free

ManyChat is the name most people start with, and its free plan is the most restrictive of the free-forever options: 25 active contacts, 4 automations, ManyChat branding. Every person your bot messages in a month counts as an active contact, so the allowance runs out after about 25 commenters.

  • Good for: learning ManyChat's flow builder before committing to a paid plan, especially if you plan to use WhatsApp, SMS or email later.
  • Limits: a single Reel with a few dozen keyword comments uses up the month. Paid plans start at $17 and bill extra active contacts as overage. Our ManyChat pricing breakdown works through the real monthly cost, and DM Automata vs ManyChat compares the two feature by feature.

Spur and Chatfuel

Neither has a free plan. Spur offers a 7-day trial, then starts at $12 a month billed yearly for 3 automation flows. Chatfuel offers a free trial, then lists its Business plan at $69 a month. Both are built for businesses selling and supporting customers over WhatsApp as well as Instagram, so they are a different category from a creator's free comment-to-DM tool. For the full paid market, see the best Instagram DM automation tools.

The catches in free auto-DM plans

One thing to rule out first: link-in-bio tools such as Linktree are not auto-DM tools. Linktree's free plan has no Instagram auto-replies at all (they start on Premium), so it doesn't belong in a list of free DM automation plans. If you want a free bio link and free auto-DMs together, DM Automata's Free plan includes both.

Every free plan has a reason to exist: it is how the vendor gets you to upgrade. These are the catches to check before you build your funnel on one.

  • Branding in your DMs. ManyChat, LinkDM and ReplyRush all keep their branding on the free plan. A "powered by" line in a DM is small, but it tells every follower you are on a free tool, and removing it is often the first paid upgrade.
  • Contact caps vs DM caps. A DM cap counts messages sent. A contact cap counts people. An active-contact cap resets monthly but can run out in a single post; a total-contact cap grows over time as your list builds. Know which one your tool uses, because it decides when you hit the wall.
  • Per-contact billing once you upgrade. A free plan with a tiny allowance is often the doorway to a paid plan billed per contact. ManyChat charges from $0.10 down to $0.004 per extra active contact over each plan's limit, so a viral Reel raises that month's bill. Flat-rate tools (DM Automata, LinkDM, ReplyRush, CreatorFlow, InstantDM) charge a fixed monthly price instead.
  • The features that make money are paid. Email capture, follow-gated DMs, public comment replies and link tracking are the most common features held back for paid plans. A free DM that can't collect an email is a delivery tool, not a list-building tool.
  • The rest of your stack isn't included. Most free DM tools send a link, but the page that link points to, the app opener and the store are separate products with their own plans and seller fees.
  • Unofficial tools. Any "free auto DM" tool that asks for your Instagram password instead of using Instagram Login is not on the official API. That is the kind of automation that gets accounts restricted. Our guide to whether Instagram DM automation is allowed explains the rules.

How far a free plan really gets you: a worked example

Take a creator who posts 3 Reels a week, about 13 a month, and ends each one with "comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the link". Here is a realistic month:

  • Average Reel: 60 keyword comments, so about 780 comment-to-DM replies a month.
  • Story replies and DM keywords: about 100 more automated DMs.
  • Total: roughly 880 automated DMs, sent to about 550 different people once you allow for repeat commenters.
Free planCovers this month?Where it runs out
DM AutomataYes on DMs (1,000)The 500-contact cap is reached during the first month or two as the list grows
LinkDMYes on DMs (1,000)Little headroom left for one Reel that does better than average
ReplyRushYes on DMs (1,500)Most DM headroom, but no email collection or public replies
CreatorFlowNo (500 DMs)Around the eighth Reel of the month
InstantDMNo (500 credits)Roughly halfway through the month
ManyChatNo (25 active contacts)Partway through the first Reel

The takeaway: a free plan with around 1,000 DMs a month comfortably covers a creator posting three Reels a week at typical engagement. What ends the free period is usually one of three things: a Reel that takes off and brings in hundreds of comments at once, a growing contact list, or needing a second account or a feature like broadcasts. With DM Automata, the contact cap is the limit to watch; with the smaller free plans, the DM count runs out first.

When to upgrade from a free plan

Upgrade when the free plan starts costing you results, not just when a number is close to the limit. The clear signals are:

  1. You are near the DM or contact limit two months running. One spike is a good problem; a pattern means you have outgrown the tier.
  2. You want to message your list again. Free plans deliver a link once. Broadcasts to a tagged segment, like everyone who asked for your guide, are how that list turns into sales.
  3. You run more than one account, such as a personal brand and a product page.
  4. You are selling more than one thing. A single free store product is enough to test a funnel; a catalogue, plus the analytics to see what sells, is worth a subscription once real money moves through your DMs.

When you do upgrade, compare flat monthly prices with per-contact pricing using your best month, not your average one. DM Automata Pro is $14 a month ($9.91 billed yearly) for 5 Instagram accounts, 25,000 DMs a month, 10,000 contacts, unlimited automations, broadcasts, the scheduler, analytics and unlimited store products (0% platform fees on every plan), and it never charges per contact. Local prices apply in many countries; see pricing for yours.

The best free ManyChat alternative for Instagram

If you are looking for a free ManyChat alternative for Instagram, the choice is mostly between DM Automata, LinkDM and ReplyRush, which all give 1,000 or more DMs a month for $0. DM Automata is the only one of them whose free plan also includes a link-in-bio page, an app opener and a store product, and it doesn't add branding to your DMs. ReplyRush gives more raw DMs; LinkDM matches the DM count. If all you need is to deliver a link, any of the three works. If you want the DM, the page it points to and something to sell in one free account, DM Automata covers more of the funnel.

How to set up a free comment-to-DM automation in DM Automata (5 minutes)

  1. Sign up free. Create an account at DM Automata. No credit card.
  2. Connect Instagram. Click Continue with Instagram and approve the permissions on Instagram's own screen. You need a professional (Creator or Business) account, and "Allow access to messages" turned on under Connected tools in Instagram's message settings.
  3. Pick a template. Click New automation and choose a template such as Comment to DM link or Lead magnet delivery. Every field fills in for you.
DM Automata automation templates: comment to DM link, DM keyword auto-reply, story reply welcome, lead magnet delivery and more
The eleven ready-made templates in the DM Automata builder, all available on the Free plan.
  1. Set the keyword. Choose one post or every post, then enter two or three keywords (for example GUIDE, LINK, SEND) with the Contains match mode, so "guide please!" still counts.
Trigger keywords GUIDE, LINK, SEND with the Contains match mode selected
Keywords and match mode: the one setting that decides which comments get a DM.
  1. Write the DM and go live. Add your link and a short, friendly message, turn on the public reply ("Sent! Check your DMs") if you like, keep the default send delay and hourly cap, and set the automation live. Comment the keyword from a second account to test it.

That is the whole setup. Our complete comment-to-DM guide goes field by field, with the message-writing tips that lift reply rates.

The bottom line

A free Instagram auto-DM tool is worth using in 2026, as long as it is a real free plan on the official API. ManyChat's free plan is a trial in all but name and Spur and Chatfuel only offer trials. Among the genuinely usable free plans, ReplyRush gives the most DMs, LinkDM matches DM Automata's 1,000, and DM Automata is the one that adds your bio link, app opener and a store product with no branding and no card. Start free, run it for a month of real posts, and upgrade only when the numbers say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Instagram auto DM tool?

Yes. DM Automata, LinkDM, ReplyRush, CreatorFlow and InstantDM all have free plans on the official Instagram API. DM Automata's includes 1,000 DMs a month, 500 contacts, a bio link, an app opener and one store product, with no credit card.

Can I automate Instagram comment-to-DM for free?

Yes. Free plans from DM Automata, LinkDM, ReplyRush and CreatorFlow all include comment-to-DM on posts and Reels. Connect a professional Instagram account, set a keyword and write the DM; it takes about five minutes.

What is the best free ManyChat alternative for Instagram?

DM Automata. Its free plan gives 1,000 DMs a month against ManyChat Free's 25 active contacts, adds no branding to your DMs, and includes a bio link, app opener and store product. LinkDM and ReplyRush are also generous free options if you only need the DM.

What is the difference between a free plan and a free trial?

A free plan is a tier you can use indefinitely at no cost, within its limits. A free trial is a paid plan you can use for a few days, usually 7 or 14, before you are charged or lose access.

How many DMs do I need a month?

A creator posting three Reels a week with around 60 keyword comments each sends about 800 to 900 automated DMs a month, including story replies. A free plan with about 1,000 DMs covers that, until a Reel goes viral.

Are free Instagram auto DM tools safe to use?

Tools on the official Instagram API that connect with Instagram Login are safe and allowed. Avoid any free tool that asks for your Instagram password, because it is not using the official API and can put your account at risk.
